Elton John’s legacy

Elton John is a British singer, songwriter and pianist who has achieved international success. He has been one of the most popular and successful musicians of his generation, selling over 300 million records worldwide. His career spans five decades and he has won five Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a Tony Award. In addition to his musical achievements, Elton John is also known for his flamboyant stage persona and fashion sense.

Elton John was born on March 25th, 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex, England. His birth name was Reginald Kenneth Dwight. His father Stanley Dwight was a Royal Air Force pilot during World War II. After the war ended, Stanley worked as a suburban commuter airline pilot while his wife Sheila Eileen raised their two sons at their home in Pinner.

Elton John began playing the piano at the age of three and showed signs of great talent from an early age. When he was eleven years old he won a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Music in London where he studied classical piano. However, Elton’s true passion was for rock ‘n’ roll music and he quickly became disillusioned with classical music training. He left the Academy after just one term.

In 1963, Elton formed his first band called Bluesology with some school friends. The following year he began working as a session musician for various artists including pop singer Lulu and psychedelic rock band Procol Harum. He also started writing songs with Bernie Taupin, who would become his longtime lyricist collaborator.

In 1967, Elton released his first single “I’ve Been Loving You” under the name Regg Dwight. It was not a commercial success but it did catch the attention of record producer Gus Dudgeon who signed him to DJM Records (later absorbed by The Rocket Record Company). That same year Elton released his self-titled debut album which failed to make any impact on the charts but did contain some promising material including “Your Song” which would later become one of his signature tunes.

Elton’s breakthrough came in 1970 with the release of his third album titled “Elton John”. The album featured more pop oriented songs such as “Border Song” and “Your Song” which were both major hits in Britain (but less so in America). The album also introduced listeners to Elton’s flamboyant stage persona with its colorful artwork and outrageous clothing worn by Elton on its cover photo shoot (including platform boots adorned with feathers). It was around this time that Elton began performing wearing outrageous costumes onstage (a practice that would continue throughout his career).

The follow-up album “Madman Across the Water” continued in a similar vein but failed to match the commercial success of its predecessor despite containing another excellent ballad (“Levon”) which became one of Elton’s most popular songs amongst fans even though it only reached #24 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in America.”Tiny Dancer”, another track from this album written about actress Bernadette Peters whom he met during filming Paramount Pictures’ 1971 film adaptation musical comedy drama film version Of Mickey RooneyAnd Judy Garland’ s 1945 musical hit movie A Star Is Born , gradually became one among eltons best known works over radio airplay decades later . After two albums that were only modestly successful commercially , 1972 ‘s Honky Chufffdteau gave him finally established himself as a major force within popular music . Powered by lead single "Rocket Man" , an atmospheric ballad about an astronaut longing for home life while away on missions , it went all way up to number two inside UKand six inside US . Other singles included uptempo gospel – influenced "Honky Cat" alongwith bluesy ode to groupies "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" both becoming top 10 hits inside UK ; while American audiences responded more favourably towards harder rocking numbers such as opener "Mellow's out Tonight"”
