Themes
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune is a fantasy novel that explores themes of family, found families, love, and acceptance. The novel follows Linus Baker, a case worker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, as he is sent to evaluate the orphanage on the island of Nowhere. There, he meets six magical children and their caretaker, Mr. Felix Finch. Through his interactions with them, Linus begins to question everything he knows about himself and what it means to be family.
Family:
Family is a central theme in The House in the Cerulean Sea. For Linus Baker, family has always been something distant and abstract. He was raised by his grandparents after his parents died when he was young, and he never really felt like he belonged anywhere. When he goes to Nowhere and meets the six children at the orphanage, he finally feels like he’s found a place where he belongs. The children have all been through so much trauma in their lives, but they’ve still managed to find happiness with each other. They become like a family to Linus, and help him to see that family doesn’t have to be blood relatives – it can be anyone who loves and accepts you for who you are.
Love:
Love is another important theme in The House in the Cerulean Sea . Linus has always been afraid of love because he doesn’t want to get hurt again after losing his parents at such a young age. But meeting the children at the orphanage changes his perspective on love. He starts to see that love isn’t necessarily about getting hurt – it’s about giving yourself fully to someone else and being there for them no matter what happens. This realization leads him to open up more emotionally and ultimately leads him to find happiness with Mr. Finch.
Acceptance:
Acceptance is another key theme explored in The House in the Cerulean Sea . Throughout his life, Linus has always felt like an outsider looking in – like he’s never really fit into any one place or group of people. But on Nowhere Island, everything is different. Everyone accepts him for who he is – even though they know next-to-nothing about him – and they welcome him into their home without hesitation or judgment. This experience helps Linus learn to accept himself for who he is – flaws and all – and ultimately leads him to find happiness
